The year 1964 marks when the world-renowned trade show, known as electronica, made its first debut as a venue for companies to showcase their various electronic technologies. Since its beginning, electronica has grown exponentially, as today it’s the world’s largest and highly recognized trade show for a wide range of electronic products and services, including components, systems and applications.
In 1964, electronica’s first show attracted participants and visitors from Europe, the United States, Japan and the Soviet Union. The second electronica in 1966 immensely caught German companies’ interests to grow business. During the same year, the amount of exhibition space nearly doubled, as well as the total number of booth and exhibiting companies. Since then, electronica has grown quickly and consistently to become the industry’s most respected platform for international businesses to showcase and discuss their technological advancements. Today, various technological forums are also hosted at electronica to provide a chance for scientists, engineers and developers to exchange their ideas in person.
As a media-focused event, electronica paved the way for consumers to accept new technologies. The show helped the electronics industry first introduce its innovations to consumers in the 1960’s and 1970’s with developments such as the floppy disk in 1969, the microprocessor in the early 1970’s, and teletext services in 1977. In recent years, 5G, Internet of Things, electric cars, artificial intelligence, and blockchains have all been key topics at electronica.
Each year, the electronica experience is redefined with more attendance and participation recorded at every show. The first electronica in 1964 started with only 140 exhibitors participating with 13,400 visitors in attendance. electronica 2016 had a historical turnout with 2,913 exhibitors and 73,451 visitors. In 2018, with additional halls, electronica is expected to be bigger than ever before!
As the electronics industry globally expands, electronica catches the wave as well. The year 2000 signifies the beginning of a new era for electronica with the birth of electronica India and electronica China following in 2002. Since then, both electronica India and electronica China have been continually running on an annual basis, attracting more visitors and exhibitors each year. The international expansion of electronica has helped connect different branches of the electronics industry as well as stimulate new technological developments.
