NAND Flash Prices Continue to Increase

Global shortage of NAND Flash is continuing to spread and it will likely cause prices of SSDs (solid-state drives) and EMMCs (embedded multi-media controllers) to rise by over 10%. This trend is due the strong smartphone shipments, growing SSD demand, and the increase in the average memory density of eMMCs and eMCPs (embedded multi-chip package).

NAND flash memory is a type of non-volatile small footprint storage technology that doesn’t require power to retain data. This makes it ideal as storage for portable devices like smartphones, explaining the rise in demand and subsequent shortage in supply.

While the shortage may be bad news for buyers, suppliers have experienced robust sales volume and revenues in the fourth quarter of 2016 and into 2017. The short supply, coupled with strong demand, also did contribute to rising prices of NAND flash wafers and memory cards through the end of 2016.
